We had an bright idea to cross into Uganda to see the big game parks and meet up with friends, but decide as its my first safari, I may as well see Akagera while I'm here. We will camp for 2 nights and return on Sunday. (I could easily spend a month touring Uganda- the visa is $50- so alas, I'll have to save it for next time.)
We enjoy a fantastic buffet lunch at Afrika Bite (pronounced Bee-teh, meaning "Hi!" in Kinyarwanda) and visit Simba supermarket to buy our food supplies for the 3 day trip. The friends we're staying with lend us a yoga mat (forgot one ground mat), cool box and a pot for cooking. I realise I haven't been camping for years!
We book a small Rav4 with safari tyres and driver for $120 per day. The weather in Kigali is lovely and hot during the day with the odd shower and cool at night. Azobe is on her period (!) so J tries to fashion a sanitary panty out of an old paper bag which lasts about half an hr. I change the rest of my cash into Rwandan Francs and end up with 330,000... a lot of notes! (826 to the pound).
Being official "Genocide of the Tutsi" week, a lot of businesses are closed or open half days, and all TV and radio stations play genocide-related programs and the most beautiful, melancholic music.
